Recording drums with only two mics — is it really possible?
In this video, I put it to the test: comparing six different mic pairs, from €5000 tube condensers down to the humble SM57. As a bonus, I even tried recording the entire kit in mono with just one SM57 (about €100) to see if it can still hold up inside a mix.
I’ll show you how each mic pair sounded raw, what mixing moves I used to make it work in a song, and how the results compare. This way you can hear for yourself what really matters: mic choice, placement, and processing.
No matter if you’re recording at home with limited gear or working in a pro studio, this test shows what’s possible with a minimalist setup.
