What started as a personal challenge, became a community in the Netherlands of musicians that want to play Brazilian music together. The great thing is that this community keeps on growing, so new collaborations keep happening such as this wonderful one with Laura and Michael.
Laura Polence (1987) is a singer and composer from Latvia, since the year 2007 based in the Netherlands. Her musical background of Latvian folk music and 12 years of European academic music studies have merged with a strong interest in modern jazz, the popular music of Brazil, and singer-songwriter-like compositional ideas in the last couple of years. Laura won the Best Composition Prize of the “Dutch Jazz Competition 2012” and is one of three singers in the band How Town.
“Few composer-improvisers can charm a listener like Michael Moore. His cool, silky tone, a bit dry, but not unpleasantly so, attracts your ear to his playing. His compositions seem effortlessly lyrical, but there’s always some odd little touch to grab your attention… This combination of modest beauty, sly intelligence, and clear focus is entirely winning.” - Ed Hazell, Point of Departure
Michael Moore (1954, Eureka, California, USA) is a saxophone & clarinet player active primarily in Europe and North America playing creative jazz and improvised musics. He leads his own ensembles, works with the Instant Composers Pool Orchestra and many others, collaborates with dancers, teaches music at the Conservatories of Amsterdam and Groningen in the Netherlands, and produces recordings.
