Manchester United are knocked out by Grimsby Town after an incredible 90 minutes that ended 2-2, followed by 26 penalties to decide the tie, with the hosts winning 12-11. Grimsby started fantastically, as they took a 2-0 lead after 30 minutes. Burns’ deep cross found Vernam at the back-post, who controlled the ball then blasted past a hapless Onana at his near post after 22 minutes. Just eight minutes later, Onana fumbled a cross and Warren found himself with an empty net in front of him, doubling their advantage. United’s substitutions at half-time made a difference, when, with 15 minutes to play, Mbeumo scored his first United goal, cutting in onto his left foot and passing the ball into the far corner. In the 89th minute, Mount’s deep corner found a stooping Maguire at the back-post. Pym could not get enough behind the shot and all of a sudden it was 2-2 and heading to penalties. After 24 penalties, the sides were still even at 11-11. Burns stepped up to give Grimsby a 12-11 lead, and then, needing to score to stay in it, Mbeumo hit the bar and that was that – League Two Grimsby Town beat Manchester United. Across the 90 minutes, Grimsby had an xG of 1.61, whereas United’s was 2.87 (from 28 shots).
