There is a popular caption I’ve seen many times on social media that will accompany a video of someone’s pet dog: “Dogs are the best Humans.” Meaning that even dogs act as good as, or better than humans most of the time!

I think Shri Purandaradasar must have been ahead of his time when he composed this beautiful song in which he says:
Look! The dog is coming here! But the dog is not a real dog, the dog is actually a human. The one who hits a dog, disobeys and shouts at their parents, who doesn’t follow the norms of society… One who doesn’t repay their debts, who eats in unhealthy places, who doesn’t feed their guests… Basically those who lack morals, they are the real dogs in this world!

A beautiful composition by Shri Purandaradasa.

I performed this for Mysuru Sangeetha Sugandha, organized by Sangeet Natak Akademi, Ministry of Tourism, and Ministry of Culture. It’s a great initiative to bring our culture out to more rasikas, especially school children who were brought in from surrounding areas for the festival.
