Believe it or not, the majority of Sonata No. 6 in g minor was not actually written by Antonio Vivaldi. This sonata is part of a set of sonatas titled “Il pastor fido,” written by Frenchman Nicolas Chédeville. The reason why these sonatas have been attributed to Vivaldi for so long is that they were published under his name. Chédeville had paid a certain amount of money in order to have his work be sold under Vivaldi’s name. Back in the day, Vivaldi was (and still is) a very popular composer so Chédeville would get much more income if Vivaldi’s name was printed on his music. Despite the fact that Chédeville wrote most of Sonata no. 6 in g minor, Vivaldi did write the fourth movement of it. That’s because Chédeville lifted it straight from Vivaldi’s Violin Concerto in d minor! Despite all of the shady business around this sonata, it is arguably the best of the “Il pastor fido” sonatas. Please enjoy Sonata no. 6 in g minor.
