Theology of Grace: Actual Grace
Actual Grace is the temporary, supernatural help from God given to enlighten the mind and strengthen the will so that a person may do good and avoid evil. Unlike Sanctifying Grace, which dwells permanently in the soul, Actual Grace is given at specific moments—especially in times of temptation, suffering, conversion, or important moral decisions.
This grace moves the heart quietly but powerfully: a sudden desire to pray, the courage to repent, the strength to forgive, or the inner warning to turn away from sin. Actual Grace always comes first—it is God who takes the initiative. Yet, while grace is freely given, it does not destroy human freedom; the person may cooperate with it or resist it. Salvation, therefore, involves a real cooperation between divine grace and human response.
The Church teaches that without Actual Grace, no one can begin, continue, or complete any saving act. It is evidence of God’s mercy constantly at work in daily life, drawing every soul toward holiness and ultimately toward union with Him.
