On a beautiful November day, 50+ year-old EMDs ruled the former Western Maryland rails on Catoctin and Jacks Mountains with a display of power that's hard to find on a shortline and Class I in the same place at the same time.
We'll start out by chasing Maryland Midland UBHF from Flint to Sabillasville, MD before catching CSX B702 picking up the MMID freight at Highfield, MD. The two shots of UBHF show GP38-3s 2060 and 2061 and SD40M-2 3450 struggling on the point of 34 cement loads with SD40M-2s 3451 and 3448 cut in between them and their 9 empties. After cutting their train off at the CSX interchange and picking up their freight for Union Bridge, B702's SD40-2s 8388, 8350, and 8400 struggle to hold back the heavy MMID cut before doubling up against their cars from the grit mill and running back to Hagerstown.
For those keeping track of power, here's everything that was working in Highfield, which includes a Western Maryland unit on home rails.
