Why didn't God forgive sins WITHOUT Killing Jesus??

Christianity teaches that all humans are "sinful" which means we choose our own way over Gods way. Because of this "sin" we all deserve to die and go to hell. But God "bought" our forgiveness by sending Jesus to die on the cross.  And if we believe in Jesus then we will be saved and live forever in heaven with the Lord.
That's all fine and dandy I guess, but why didn't God just forgive without "buying" the forgiveness??  Why didn't he just forgive without sending Jesus to die??  Seriously why was Jesus's crucifixion necessary?? HES GOD! CAN'T HE DO WHENEVER HE WANTS??
