"In a World Like This," original song by Bianca Merkley

This song was written last year during a year full of changes, both on the micro level as well as on the macro level. I had found out that my dad and step mom were getting divorced, and that was what inspired the first line of this song. It was also an election year, which often causes an increased level of uncertainty.

The song took many forms, which I guess is fitting for a song that is about change and trusting the process. I had at least 20 versions of this song before landing on this one. I'm pretty sure the process of creating this song was as much for me as it might have been for anyone else. In the process of writing this song, I decided to have the choruses be reminders of things that I can rely on. I even "Googled," and asked what were things that people could truly rely on. Many of the answers that came up were exactly what I had already been writing about...things such as "The sunrise and sunset," and things that can be found in nature. These parts of nature are reminders to me of the divine.

I finished writing the rest of the song in the summer at a writers retreat that takes place in rural southern Utah. It was those surroundings that helped me to complete the song, which I hope can be meaningful to you now as you listen. Thank you for taking the time to do so! Gratefully, Bianca
