Hop Along

This is the second of two songs about Hop-Along the rooster and my Grandpa. I was challenged to choose my favorite version... so I gave in to why bother? In 1973 we moved from the suburbs to a little 4 acre farm in a more rural part of Sacramento County. Grandpa Phillips would stay with us in the tiny two bedroom home built, it seemed- of rail ties and cardboard. It was a little sturdier than that but hardly. We had four bunk beds in each room and mom and dad slept in the family room. Although my dad would assure us Grandpa ruled with a whip while he was growing up- he was always gentle to us grandkids. And one of my favorite memories was him sitting and singing in the evenings. He didn't play guitar like the song suggests, but the AI modeling seemed to prefer that story line. I also could not say Christmas had any connection to the rooster rescue, but Hop-Along was a realy rooster Grandpa rescued and it was sweet to watch him sing to Hop-Along.

This song captures a heartwarming Christmas morning when Grandpa discovers a rooster caught in fishing line. With compassion, he frees the bird, forming an unexpected bond. As they share moments on the porch, Grandpa sings cowboy ballads while Hop-along, the rooster, listens intently. Over the years, their friendship flourishes, symbolizing joy and companionship, reminding the singer of the enduring power of kindness and music during the holiday season.
