A preview version of "OnTheMove" composed by Wil Offermans in 2004 for the eWave flute ensemble and an 8-channel tape (2 piccolo's; 5 flutes; 1 alto flute; 1 bass flute; 2 contrabass flutes; 2 Thumpy flutes), commissioned by Gaudeamus Foundation, Amsterdam, The Netherlands. Composed as part of the project 'eWave, creations for flutes and live-electronics' with partners Grame (Lyon, France); CRM (Rome, Italy); LIEM-CDMC (Madrid, Spain) and Gaudeamus Foundation (Amsterdam; The Netherlands) and the European Contemporary Flute Ensemble eWave. Recorded in 2004.
In "OnTheMove" the musicians walk and move in the space. While moving, their playing is as well the result of their activity and position. In this way the musicians are participating a spatial mechanism of interaction. In fact they themselves are part of the score.
Wil Offermans: "It has been so in the past, and we may assume it will be similar in future: Europe is a slowly but surely drifting continent with its people continually on the move. In this - maybe since our life is too short - we fix borders and pretend our nationalities. Though, history teaches us that borders and nationalities are actually momentary expressions of mankind. In reality, we are constantly crossing and transforming our borders. In reality, we are all constantly on the move."
