1976 McLaren M26 F1 Cosworth DFV attacking Goodwood's Hillclimb in Dry & Wet Conditions!

It's always very special to see some old machines being driven fast on the tight hillclimb course of Goodwood. During this year's Festival of Speed I fell in love with the McLaren M26 F1 car driven by Michael Lyons both during the McLaren 60th Anniversay batch and on the timed shootout, in which he finished third with a time of 46.89.

This M26 is chassis M26-01 and it's the only M26 example that was used during the 1976 season, driven by Jochen Mass in the Dutch Grand Prix and only in the free practice sessions of the Italian GP. The M26 was in fact intended to be introduced mid season to replace the aging M23 model, aiming to be lighter and lower than this one, with a smaller frontal area and narrower monocoque to reduce drag. But after the poor result of the first race it was decided the car needed further design work done due to cooling issues emerged as there was simply no room for all the radiators in the M26's small side-pods. The M26 was not used again during 1976.

McLaren relied on the M23 during the rest of the season and for the first few races of 1977. The redesigned M26 made its debut at the Spanish Grand Prix. The final solution was to place the oil-cooler to the nose of the car. Unfortunately, this also eliminated part of the gains in drag reduction compared to the M23. Anyway James Hunt managed to win three times and scored two other podium finishes during the course of the season. The M26 was retired after a couple of runs in early 1979.
