The Itsukushima Torii Gate, known as O-Torii, is an iconic symbol of the Itsukushima Shrine and a celebrated landmark in Japan. Located approximately 200 meters offshore from the shrine on Miyajima Island, this striking gate is renowned for its dramatic appearance, particularly during high tide when it appears to float on the water.
Key Features
Height and Structure: The O-Torii stands at 16 meters (about 52 feet) tall and weighs around 60 tons. It is constructed from ancient camphor wood, which is naturally resistant to decay and insects, ensuring its longevity against the harsh marine environment.
Design and Engineering: The gate's design includes six pillars that are not buried in the seabed; instead, they rely on their own weight for stability. The structure is ingeniously balanced with stones and pebbles placed at the top, showcasing remarkable craftsmanship and engineering.
Historical Significance: The current version of the O-Torii was completed in 1875, marking it as the eighth iteration since its original erection in 1168. Each reconstruction has maintained the traditional architectural style while adapting to environmental challenges.
