July 20th, 1945. Harry Truman is in the American sector of Berlin, watching the United States flag rise over a ruined German capital. A few steps away stands General George Patton, one of the most aggressive field commanders America has used in this war, still in his polished helmet with his trademark pistols even though the fighting in Europe is over. That same summer, in a private diary entry that was never meant for the public, Truman wrote down what he really thought of Patton and grouped him with the kind of generals he believed were too dangerous to trust in politics. In this video, we are going to unpack that judgment, and see how it explains why, within a few months, no one in Washington fought to keep Patton in a position of real power, and how that quiet decision effectively ended his role in shaping the new world that became the Cold War.
