In science, we often hear the word force. But what is a force and what happens when forces are applied to the objects around us?

Forces are what make things move. You can think of a force as a push or a pull. A push is when you apply force to move something away from you. A pull is when you apply force to bring something closer to you.

Every time you push or pull something, you are using a force. Here are some examples to help you understand: When you throw a ball, you are pushing it away from you. When you pull on a fishing rod, you are pulling the rod and line (and hopefully a fish) towards you. Another example is opening a door; when you push a door open, you are using a force to move it. And when you play tug of war, you are pulling on the rope to try and move the other team.

Forces can be different in size or strength, which is called magnitude, and they can also be different in direction. Forces of different magnitudes and directions affect the movement of objects in different ways.

The size of the force applied to an object affects how fast it moves and how far it goes. For example, if you kick a ball gently, you are using a small force. The ball moves slowly and moves a short distance.

But if you kick it as hard as you can, you are using a large force. The ball moves faster and further.

The direction of a force is also important. If you push a toy car forward, it will move forward. If you throw a ball straight up, it will go up into the air.

The direction in which you apply the force determines the direction in which the object will move. For example, if you throw it to the side, it will go in that direction instead. So, generally an object will move in the small direction of the force applied to it.

Forces are all around us and they make things move in different ways. By understanding the magnitude and direction of forces, we can better understand how things move and why they move the way they do.
