The attachment theory, developed by John Bowlby, posits that early emotional bonds between a child and their parental figures profoundly influence their emotional and relational development.
Bowlby asserts that attachment is a primary need, as essential as food, because it guarantees security and survival.
Mary Ainsworth enriched this theory with her “Strange Situation” experiment, which observes children's reactions when separated from and reunited with their mothers. She identified three main attachment styles: Secure (the child is reassured by the parent's presence), Insecure-Avoidant (the child minimizes their emotional needs), and Insecure-Anxious or Ambivalent (the child is anxious and uncertain).
Later, the disorganized style was added to describe contradictory behaviors, often linked to traumatic experiences. These styles develop according to the sensitivity and consistency of the parent.
According to the theory, these internal attachment patterns influence romantic and social relationships in adulthood. Secure attachment promotes trust and relational autonomy.
Conversely, insecure attachments can lead to lasting emotional and relational difficulties.
