Traveling through the Sathyamangalam-Dhimbam Ghat Road (NH 948) in the evening is a unique experience, as this stretch passes through the core of the Sathyamangalam Tiger Reserve (STR). However, because of the high wildlife activity and the challenging terrain, there are strict regulations and safety protocols you must follow.
Here is everything you need to know for your evening travel in January 2026:
🕒 Travel Timings & Night Ban
The Madras High Court has strictly regulated travel through the 27-hairpin bend stretch to protect wildlife.
For Cars & Passenger Buses: Travel is permitted only between 6:00 AM and 9:00 PM. If you reach the Bannari (Tamil Nadu) or Karapallam (Karnataka border) check-posts after 9:00 PM, you will not be allowed to enter the forest.
For Commercial Trucks: Heavy vehicles (up to 10 wheels/16.2 tonnes) are banned earlier, from 6:00 PM to 6:00 AM.
Prohibited Vehicles: Vehicles with 12 wheels or more and those over 16.2 tonnes are completely banned from this route at all times.
🛣️ Road Conditions (Jan 2026 Update)
Landslide Recovery: Be aware that multiple landslides occurred in late October 2025 (specifically at hairpin bends 7, 8, 20, and 27). While the road is open, repair work often continues in early 2026, which can lead to one-way traffic or minor delays.
Evening Fog: In January, thick mist often sets in after 5:30 PM. This significantly reduces visibility on the sharp hairpin bends.
Traffic Snarls: This road is notorious for truck breakdowns on the "V-shaped" bends. A single breakdown can cause traffic to stand still for hours. Always carry extra water and snacks.
🐘 Wildlife & Safety
The "Golden Hour" (4:30 PM – 6:30 PM) is the best time for sightings, but also the most dangerous.
Common Sightings: Elephants, Gaurs (Indian Bison), and Leopards are frequently seen crossing the road. Leopards are particularly active near bends 10, 23, and 25.
Strict No-Stopping Rule: It is illegal (and dangerous) to stop your vehicle or get out for photos/selfies. Forest officials monitor the stretch via CCTV and patrols; violators face heavy fines.
Speed Limit: Maintain a steady 20 km/hr on the ghats.
🐅 Evening Safari Options
If your goal is wildlife watching rather than just transit, consider an official Forest Department safari:
Timings: 3:30 PM – 6:00 PM.
Reporting Point: Dimbam Check Post or Hasanur Range Office.
Booking: Can be done at the forest office on arrival or via the official STR eco-tourism portal.
💡 Travel Tips for your Evening Drive
Fuel Up: There are no petrol bunks between Sathyamangalam and Chamarajanagar.
Timing: Aim to cross the Bannari check-post by 4:30 PM to enjoy the sunset views and wildlife sightings without the pressure of the 9:00 PM cutoff.
Network: Mobile signal is extremely weak or non-existent once you enter the forest.
