Here is an ASMR video on cutting a nut for a Fender style guitar. When I make a guitar nut from scratch the only measuring I end up doing is for the spacing between the strings. Once I get those lined up on the ruler I take them to the final depth. This is done mostly my feel and visual. If I was putting measurements to it, I would shoot for .015" to .020" from the High E to Low E. There is a lot of tools, techniques, and gadgets out there to help people achieve this.
