Social Worker in Maximum Security Prison Prepares People for Success (Leslie Kalil 2020)

Today we feature a social worker who works in a maximum-security prison, preparing people for success.

As a psychology student at Syracuse University, Leslie Kalil, learned from a book I wrote called About Prison. While reading that book, she reached out to learn more. I was in my 18th year of confinement at the time. She interned as at a maximum-security prison and we offered resources that she could use to teach and inspire people inside.

People who are going through the criminal justice system respond well to messages of hope, especially when those messages come from people who have gone through the system. When Leslie reached out to our team at Prison Professors, I asked if she would share the story about how she learned from our work.

Many of our viewers are serving time in jails and prisons. I want them to see how the decisions they’re making every day influence the life and opportunities that will open after the person is released.
