EMI master Ki 7007-2, rec. Paris, 1934
Four unknown singers with Rudolf Goehr (piano, arranger) and A. Valsien's orchestra.
Although not one of their best records, this certainly is a piece of history. Although not very happy about the cooperation with a novelty orchestra, the Cinq de la Chanson repeatedly recorded with Valsien's ensemble, and on many of these titles you can hear they'd rather be somewhere else. However, this became one of the group's biggest successes. Back in Germany, from where Goehr had immigrated to France little more than a year before, the Comedian Harmonists decided to rearrange the song with all three original verses (here omitted because of the orchestra), and shortly afterwards recorded a version in German language, too. This, of course, was "Mein kleiner grüner Kaktus", which hardly sold any copies in the 1930s but today is the Harmonists' most popular song. So this is definitely not the best version of the song, but legends have to start somewhere ...
