MAGDA is ADRIANA - Adriana Lecouvreur Amsterdam 1965

In the last years of his life, Francesco Cilea, the composer of Adriana Lecouvreur, had one last wish: To hear once more Magda Olivero sing his beloved Adriana. Since Magda had retired at a young age from a prospering career to raise a family, after 10 years had passed and having no children, Cilea had now become persisting in asking Olivero to again sing Adriana on stage before he died. He even invited her to work with him on the role at his summer residence, hoping to persuade her.
His argument was that she had gone beyond what he had written and he never expected a soprano to sing his music and play the role with such real passion and conviction. Magda met him in the summer of 1950 and schedule a performance for the new year. Unfortunately, Cilea died in November and never had the chance to hear the Magda he admired sing his Adriana. In his memory, she committed to sing Adriana that year and that was the beginning of a second career that lasted over 30 more years.

Now to come back to Adriana, in 1939, Magda Olivero made her debut in the role with Beniamino Gigli and sang her last performance in 1973 with Placido Domingo as Maurizio. She performed the role of the French “Tragédienne” 113 times over a span of 44 years.
Adriana requires a very good actress, one that can play another actress convincingly, and an expressive singer with a voice capable of subtle nuances. God only knows how many sopranos tried, but not many succeed in meeting the composer’s expectations. Like Cilea, I believe Magda is Adriana, but I’ll let you be the judge.
