After graduating from high school, Takeshi Koike had an interview to join Madhouse, where he met Yoshiaki Kawajiri, who accepted him and took him under his wing, joining the studio as In-between Animator and a couple of years later debuting as Animator on the 1988 OVA Kaze o Nuke!
In later years he continued working on different Madhouse productions and gradually trained under Kawajiri's "conservative" work approach. His main inspiration to become an animator was Yoshinori Kanada's work on the film Galaxy Express 999, so it's normal to see elements of Kanada's style in his work while combining it with Kawajiri's approach.
Besides Kanada and Kawajiri, among his main influences are Akihiko Yamashita, Masami Oobari and Ishii Katsuhito, as well as foreign artists such as Frank Miller, Mike Mignola and Peter Chung.
His first work as a director was the opening sequence of the film Party 7. Here we can see the deformations, slow motion, full animation, perspectives and exaggerated movements, as well as effects influenced by Kanada, all elements that would be characteristic of his work.
Later he directed Trava Fist Planet, also doing Character Design, Animation Supervision, Storyboard and Key Animation.
Thanks to Kawajiri, Koike was able to take charge of the Animatrix short The World Record, which was his second job as a director and a reference for his future projects, as in addition to Directing, he did the Character Design, Animation Supervision and with that he extensively corrected the rest of the animators to achieve a uniform style in which it's incredibly difficult to distinguish the work of other artists.
Her next major project was Redline, which lasted 7 years in production at Madhouse (3 planning and 4 production). Koike served as Director, Background Design, Ep Director, Storyboard, Character Design and Machine Design. Redline represents one of the greatest technical miracles of Japanese Animation and Koike's representative work, because he made the project be molded to his style in its entirety.
After Masao Maruyama left and Madhouse was purchased by Nippon TV, Koike left and became independent, with Lupin The Third (IIIrd) now being the franchise he would work on for several years, doing the Character Design, Animation Supervision and Key Animation of The Woman Called Fujiko Mine, then he directed the films Jigen's Gravestone, Goemon's Blood Spray and Fujiko Mine's Lie.
The influence he had from foreign artists is noticeable when Koike acts as Animation Supervisor or Character Designer, imbuing everything with angular, exaggerated, complex designs and with a block shading resulting from combining the Kanada Style and Mike Mignola's work.
He is very skilled with Character, Mechanics, Effects and Background Animation.
His characters continually stretch and contract in a very exaggerated way, to which he usually adds more drawings at specific moments to make the movement generate a strong sense of fluidity, making it something unique and striking.
He usually uses irregular timing, making different modulations to achieve particular results, for example making two different drawings in a row and then moving on to 2s
It is also common for him to implement full animation at specific moments, which has probably been influenced by Kawajiri's works. When he has freedom, he implements movements with very marked body language to the characters, making them more expressive and full of personality, distancing himself quite a bit from the Character Acting in the Japanese industry.
