THE GREAT LENT HYMNS. Orthodox Chants. The Monastic Choir of St. Elisabeth Convent

✏ We offer you a collection of orthodox chants and hymns, which are sung during different services of the Great Lent. The chants are performed by the Monastic Choir of St. Elisabeth Convent. The choir adheres to the ancient choral tradition of Znamenny chant and its variety, the Valaam chant. On Sundays and feast days, they also perform Byzantine, Greek, Old Bulgarian, Macedonian, and Georgian chants.

0:00 - "Let my prayer arise"
This chant is sung in the second part of the Liturgy of the Presanctified Gifts.
Be it known that as the reader sings: "Let my prayer be set forth as incense before Thee" all the people, whether in the church or in the altar, stand upon their knees, praying. And when there is begun "The lifting up of my hands", they stand up. After this they alternate kneeling and standing, side by side, at the verses. But the priest, standing in the altar before the Holy Table, having taken the censer with incense, censes. And when the reader sings the last Let my prayer be set forth then the priest, giving up the censer, kneels upon his knees, praying.
4:23 - "Now the Powers of Heaven"
The hymn "Now the Powers of Heaven" is sung during the solemn transfer of the Holy Gifts during the Liturgy of the Presanctified Gifts.
8:12 - "O Taste and see that the Lord is Good"
"Taste and see that the Lord is good" is a phrase from Psalm 34:8. It is the communion hymn from the Presanctified Liturgy during Lent. But Psalm 34 is used throughout the year as a prayer in preparation for communion and as a hymn after communion (in the Russian tradition). Verse 8 summarizes everything about receiving communion.
10:08 - "My soul"
Kontakion of The First Week of Great Lent. It is taken from the Great Penitential Canon of St. Andrew of Crete. The Great Canon of St. Andrew of Crete (also known as the Canon of Repentance) is a lengthy penitential canon composed in the seventh century, which is sung during Great Lent.
11:57 - "Have mercy on us..."
These are troparia taken from the evening prayer rule.
13:16 - "O Lord of hosts"
This is sung during the Great Compline service.
18:46 - "Thy Fatherly Arms"
Once a year we hear these words during the church services for the Sunday of the Prodigal Son, at the Vigil. At a tonsure ceremony this troparion is sung thrice as the person being tonsure crawls from the narthex of the church to the altar—from the sinful world from whence he came to this beloved embrace.
