This very popular trail leads to the highest point in the Phoenix Mountains, covering a 3-mile (4.8 km) out-and-back route with an elevation gain of 1,289 ft (393 m). The summit rewards hikers with beautiful panoramic views of the Sonoran Desert and the surrounding mountains. On this hike, I encountered a chuckwalla lizard, which is a desert relative of an iguana.
Due to several scrambling sections, the trail is considered challenging and is best enjoyed as a winter hike, when temperatures typically stay below 80°F (27°C). Camelback Mountain can also be hiked via the Echo Canyon Trail, an alternative route that is shorter but steeper and similarly challenging.
