Jack (Arthur Leslie) readies himself for the bowls final as the men try to tackle the odour issue from No.5. The Barlows convert their front room into a playroom for the twins. Minnie (Margot Bryant) is confused by the frothy "tonic water". Stan (Bernard Youens) samples the problematic merchandise and is unimpressed. Bobby the Cat avoids home due to the smell. Elsie (Pat Phoenix) sees through Dennis's (Philip Lowrie) pranks. Stan and Charlie (Gordon Rollings) attribute the smell to herbs and compare it to the Rovers' beer. Annie (Doris Speed) mocks Jack's chances of winning and Albert (Jack Howarth) joins as a spectator. Stan and Charlie decide the bad taste is due to not siphoning off the beer. Jerry (Graham Haberfield) returns to the yard and admits to Len (Peter Adamson) that he's been laid off. Len wishes him well but ignores his request for his old job back as he still feels betrayed. Val (Anne Reid) believes Jerry's too proud to ask for help. Annie assumes Jack lost but the regulars celebrate when Albert arrives with the cup. Jerry resorts to sleeping rough in the yard.
