After a four month run of being a “pop-up station” as TJ 98.7, Emmis Corporation has officially flipped WEPN-FM from its temporary Hot AC format to a bilingual AC station as “La Exitosa 98.7” at 6 pm ET today featuring a Spanish and English language songs from multiple decades. Around the same time, Emmis’ other station WLIB (1190 AM) also flipped from an urban AC/gospel station to this same format.
The switch was preceded by a live version of “The TJ Show” which was the main anchor of the station for the last 4 months after it was previously an ESPN Radio station until its previous operator Good Karma Brands ended its 12-year agreement to operate the station on August 31, 2024. It then switched to a temporary Hot AC station from September 1, 2024 until today when it switched to its new format. This particular format first debuted on WMIA-FM in Miami in November 2023 and has since appeared in a few other cities across the US.
After the TJ Show aired its final segment, the last two songs played were Sia’s “Cheap Thrills” featuring Sean Paul and Jax’s “Victoria’s Secret”, both of where were cut off towards the end of the song before airing the first few seconds of its now former station ID before going dark for a few seconds. Afterwards, the new format began with a teaser followed by its first two songs, “No Podrías” by Christian Castro (in Spanish) followed by its first English song, Haddaway’s “What Is Love”.
