This key theme of this essay is the affirmation of life as described in Nietzsche's philosophy. While his conception of Amor Fati (love of fate) has been popularized, we need to examine his other related ideas to avoid over-simplifying his philosophy. Nietzsche's philosophy is far from the thoughtless optimism that may be suggested by his idea saying "yes" to life. Neither can his philosophy be fully characterized as a type of stoicism. A recurring motif in his works is the tragic world-view but he does not succumb to tragedy. Instead, he maintained a "pessimism of strength."
In the process of creating this essay, I struggled with this idea of affirming life in a world that is in decline. I even questioned the value of devoting so much time and energy to philosophy when there are other more urgent problems that could be addressed. Upon further reflection, I have resolved that we need the ideas and skills that are cultivated through studying philosophy. Many of the problems of this world are rooted in bad ideas and weakness of character. An education in philosophy can help us combat against questionable ideas and strengthen our character. Philosophy should empower us to live life on our own terms.
