When Strahd became a vampire, the Dark Powers surrounded Barovia in magical mist and spirited it away from the material plane. But the mists didn't go away. They blocked out the sunlight that had once bathed the valley of Barovia and made it green and lush. Plant life began to die off, and the denizens of Strahd's domain began to die off from famine. Eventually, an equilibrium was reached. But sealed away, a new threat emerged in Barovia. Not a threat to the body, but to the soul.
