We Thais are great at nicknames. One that became popular following the 2014 military coup is “Kala Land,” meaning that we live in a coconut shell.
One example that illustrates the Kala Land nickname is our laws, specifically the new laws in the Official Information Act.
General Prayut Chan-o-cha often cautions (or threatens) the people, “Obey the law. There’s a law for everything.”
Supporters of the Prayut Regime echo the same sentiment. To the banned opposition politicians and imprisoned pro-democracy activists, they mock, “Well, don’t break the law.”
But the impertinent questions are these:
Is the law just?
Is the law based on the principles of human rights?
Does the law guarantee what a civilized society should guarantee: civil liberty?
Is the law itself an abuse of human rights?
Is the law keeping us in the “kala”?
