Released in arcades in 1982 by Williams, Sinistar is a top-down space shooter for 1 or 2 players (alternating). The objective is to mine asteroids (called Planetoids) for crystals and use them to make Sinibombs to destroy the space station Sinistar...or otherwise run.
The gameplay is simple as there are only 3 types of enemies-Workers, who also collect crystals needed to build the Sinistar; Warriors, tank-like ships that attack you (and after a couple missed shots they WILL hit and destroy you), and once all 20 pieces are assembled the Sinistar itself. When ti's completed you'll know because it will say "Beware, I Live!" While it can be damaged in construction with Sinibombs, it can't be destroyed until complete-it takes 13 Sinibomb hits to destroy a Sinistar, assuming Workeres don't get a chance to repair it. You can only carry 20 Sinibombs at once and enemies or planetoids can intercept them. The Sinistar flies in random oval-like parrents around the playfield, but given enough time it will catch you, taunting you all along the way with phrases like "I Hunger", "Beware, Coward!" and my favotire, "Run! Run! Run!" and it will occasionally "roar". If you destroy a Sinistar you get a break for about 10 seconds as you warp to a new zone and do it all over again. The game is endless and only ends when you run out of lives.
While not the first arcade game to use digitized speech, the quality of the speech, plus the frantic pace of gameplay and the Sinistar being the first boss-type enemy to actually taunt players (which to this date is still woefully underutilized in gaming) made this, like just about every 1980 Williams Electronics game, a megahit.
The game was released for just about every existing-at-the-time console between 1995-2012 as part of these games: Williams Arcade's Greatest Hits (Sega Genesis, Super Nintendo Entertainment System, Sega Saturn, Sony PlayStation), Midway's Greatest Arcade Hits Vol. 1 (Sega Dreamcast, Nintendo 64, Nintendo Game Boy Advance), Midway Arcade Treasures (Nintendo GameCube, PlayStation 2, Microsoft Xbox, PC), Midway Arcade Treasures Extended Play (PSP), Midway Arcade Origins (Xbox 360, PlayStation 3).
