Manoj Bajpayee, Nawazuddin Siddiqui & Jaideep Ahlawat On GOW, Theatre & Anurag Kashyap | Roundtable

Actors Manoj Bajpayee, Nawazuddin Siddiqui & Jaideep Ahlawat were in coversation with Filmfare's Editor-In-Chief Jitesh Pillai and revealed their insights about theatre, cinema, working with talented co-actors and express the lack of appreciation among fellow artists within the industry for their body of work.

Manoj Bajpayee candidly shared that director Anurag Kashyap was initially hesitant to cast him in Gangs of Wasseypur, fearing he might not surpass his iconic performance as Bhiku Mhatre in Satya. Bajpayee emphasized the significance of receiving validation from directors, as they closely observe an actor's journey and can offer fresh perspectives on their performances. He goes on to praise Nawazuddin's role in the film The Bypass and shares the casting story behind Irrfan Khan's Maqbool - which he desperately wanted to be a part of.

Nawazuddin Siddiqui talks about his experience of working in theatre and shares a delightful story of sharing stage with Manoj - where he was impressed by Bajpayee's dedication to his role. The Haddi actor emphasises on the skill of subtle acting and unlearning overexaggerated form of acting in films. He also recites Manoj Bajpayee's dialogue from a play which leaves everyone in awe of his dedication to his craft.

Jaideep Ahlawat recalls his days as a student in FTII, his exposure to world cinema and legendary filmmakers like Ritwik Ghatak, Guru Dutt & Satyajit Ray. Interestingly the Paatal Lok actor shares how he and his classmates would rehearse Manoj's monologues from his film Shool as an exercise in class. He later delves into his portrayal of a homosexual character in Ajeeb Dastans with diginity and sensitivity and not turning it into a cliche.

The actors further reflect on the influence of the late Irrfan Khan on their craft. They delve into how embracing vulnerability and emotional depth—qualities often associated with the feminine side—enhances their performances. Their conversation turns out to be raw, authentic and focuses on the need for continuous growth in the art of acting.
