In the early morning hours of May 18, 1897 a group of men, described as “ghouls” in the aftermath, went into Riverview Cemetery and dug up the grave of William S. Ladd. Ladd was one of Portland, Oregon’s early fathers, playing a role in many aspects of the city’s development and growth. Those guilty men knew they could score quite the ransom here, but seldom are any crimes done to perfection. This is the story of the grave robbing of William S. Ladd, the investigation, how the guilty parties were discovered and how they were punished.
Included in this video is a trip I paid to the cemetery, where so many prominent early Portlander's are buried, so I could tell the story from right where it happened.
