For Summer 2003 at Yves Saint Laurent, Tom Ford mined the house’s surrealist heritage, updating it with a daring mix of elegance and provocation. His opening look a sharp brown jacket over a coffee chiffon dress set the tone: ladylike silhouettes in muted shades of lavender, champagne, and soft neutrals.

True to the surrealist spirit, details carried the punch. Shoes with enamel lips and nails, trompe l’oeil prints, and playful cloaks nodded to Dalí and Schiaparelli. But Ford pushed boundaries further with corset-cut jackets, painted nipples, and even a black chiffon gown with a shocking pendant detail. Scandalizing gestures aside, the collection also offered timeless treasures: sleek tuxedos, delicate dresses, and beautifully cut eveningwear that affirmed his command of YSL’s codes.

Tom Ford once again proved he could balance controversy with covetable design — surrealism for the modern age.
