Born as Danny Malewa, Kamazu was a pioneer of Kwaito, the genre that defined South Africa’s youth in the 90s with a mix of house beats, African rhythms, and township slang.
Kwaito, from the Afrikaans word kwaai (cool/angry), became populair during apartheid’s final years. Kamazu had hits like “Indaba Kabani’’(whose problem is it), “Mjukeit,” and “Korobela” capturing the era’s energy and resilience.
Though the hightimes of Kwaito have passed, modern edits by artists like Dimitri from Paris keep Kamazu’s music still lighting up dancefloors worldwide.
A pioneer of South African music, known for his signature fusion of traditional and contemporary sounds.
