Fructose is a monosaccharide sugar that can be synthesized in the body.
Its biosynthesis is primarily relevant in the liver and is part of glucose metabolism.
Pathway:

Glycolysis:

Glucose is converted into glucose-6-phosphate (G6P) and then into fructose-6-phosphate (F6P) in the initial steps of glycolysis.

Formation of Fructose-1-Phosphate:

Fructose-6-phosphate is converted into fructose-1-phosphate by the action of the enzyme ketohexokinase.

Formation of Fructose:

Fructose-1-phosphate is then hydrolyzed to free fructose and inorganic phosphate by fructose-1-phosphate aldolase.

Fructose Metabolism Disorders:
Hereditary Fructose Intolerance (HFI): A deficiency in aldolase B enzyme leads to the accumulation of fructose-1-phosphate, inhibiting glycogenolysis and gluconeogenesis. This can result in hypoglycemia, vomiting, and liver dysfunction.

Fructose in Diet:
Excessive dietary fructose can lead to increased de novo lipogenesis, contributing to obesity and metabolic syndrome.
