A DIY differential replacement job on a Freelander 1 (1996 - 2006 year). The same differential is used on the TD4, 1.8 nd V6 Land Rover Freelander 1. There are some tough nuts and bolts to remove but DIY possible. No need to lower the rear sub-frame, as I prove here.
It is useful to remove the rear half of the exhaust for more space.
An impact driver wrench with a high torque is useful, like on of those deWalt ones. See Amazon here: https://amzn.to/41CHfsR
A Torque wrench for doing up to the right torque setting is needed. See here: https://amzn.to/3ZVbXw1
A power bar (long wrench bar on 1/2" drive end) may be useful. See here: https://amzn.to/3ZVUvHJ
Using these links will not cost you any more than going there without using these, but it does earn me some few coins and saves you a bit of time.

If you need to find a replacement new or recon differential try ebay, facebook groups (be careful of scams) or a web search, when I searched I found one from winchestergears.com for £278 or from bellengineering.co.uk for £350. Quite good prices.
Look hard enough around the internet and you will probably find a Land Rover Workshop Manual Services Procedures LRL0490. Well written. Or you could look for a Haynes workshop manual. I have a spare one I might sell, £20. The official LR procedure talks about using LR tool LRT-51-013 to align the diff on reassembly. In reality there doesn’t seem to be a lot of movement after loosely putting on the mounting bolts so it doesn’t seem that essential, but your choice. You can buy the tool on ebay.
If you are doing this because of wear or damage, check that your VCU (centre prop shaft viscous coupling unit) still has some capability to slowly slip and hasn’t caused damage by being locked solid.. Search for VCU test. I might do a video on that with a bit of persuasion! Having equally tyre tread on all tyres helps minimise transmission wear.
