Saugus River Pipeline Installation | Iron Strong Field Report
Welcome to another edition of Iron Strong! In this episode, we take you to the Saugus River in Massachusetts, where an impressive infrastructure feat was just completed as part of the $84 million Lynn-Saugus Belden Bly Bridge replacement project.
This job wasn’t just about building a new Dutch-style bascule bridge—it also included the installation of a critical MWRA waterline beneath an active waterway, connecting the communities of Saugus and Lynn. From freezing temps and strong tides to a busy fishing channel, this project was anything but ordinary.
💪 Project Highlights:
Location: Route 107 over the Saugus River, MA
Pipe Specs: 16” & 20” TR Flex® Restrained Joint Ductile Iron Pipe
Protective Measures: V-Bio® Enhanced Polyethylene Encasement
Challenges: Tidal fluctuations, marine traffic, frigid winter conditions
🌊 Installation Process:
Riverbed dredged using GPS-equipped equipment
Pipe sections assembled and floated into the river
Carefully timed placement using cranes and a marine crew
Pipeline sunk and positioned with diver assistance and GPS confirmation
This successful installation is a testament to expert planning, strong partnerships, and the unbeatable performance of McWane Ductile Iron Pipe—resilient, corrosion-resistant, and made for the toughest environments.
👷♂️ Shoutout to our project partners: SPS New England and F.W. Webb!
