Hemis festival celebrates Guru Rinpoche. Its key day occurs on the Tibetan Monkey Year on the 10th lunar day of the 5th Monkey lunar month. This is the birthday of Guru Padmasambhava, known as Guru Rinpochr, the Precious Teacher to the people of the Himalayas.

𝐌𝐨𝐫𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐬𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧:
02:51 𝟏. 𝐒𝐞𝐭𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐬 𝐋𝐢𝐦𝐢𝐭𝐬: 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝟏𝟑 𝐁𝐥𝐚𝐜𝐤 𝐇𝐚𝐭 𝐃𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐫𝐬
Thirteen monks appear wearing a complete tantric dress with great symbolic meaning. With their spiritual power, and through the ritual gestures and dancing that evoke divine wrath, they cut off evil spirits and negative influences, dispelling them far away. In the process, they set a physical boundary so that no entity may enter the sacred space or bring obstacles in the holy program.

Sixteen dancers wearing copper gilded masks appear. People call them the Sixteen Brass Masks. There are actually divine fairies. They purify the place, the teachers and disciples and bring down blessings that transform the whole scene into a pure Buddha land. Their function is to consecrate.
08:25 𝟑. 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐄𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐌𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐟𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐏𝐚𝐝𝐦𝐚𝐬𝐚𝐦𝐛𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐚
Thus invoked, the Eight Manifestations of Guru Padmasambhava, which are the principal forms he assumed at different points in his life, come out.
𝐚. 𝐆𝐮𝐫𝐮 𝐓𝐨𝐤𝐲𝐨 𝐃𝐨𝐫𝐣𝐞 (𝐏𝐚𝐝𝐦𝐚 𝐕𝐚𝐣𝐫𝐚)
This is the manifestation of Guru Rinpoche when he was miraculously born on the 10th lunar day of the 5th month at sunrise, on a lotus flower in the lake of Dhanakosha in Oddiyana.
13:41 𝐛. 𝐆𝐮𝐫𝐮 𝐏𝐚𝐝𝐦𝐚𝐬𝐚𝐦𝐛𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐚
In this form, Guru Rinpoche reached Tibet on the 10th lunar day of the 10th Tibetan month in the late 8th century, invited by the Tibetan emperor.
𝐜. 𝐆𝐮𝐫𝐮 𝐋𝐨𝐝𝐚𝐧 𝐂𝐡𝐨𝐠 𝐒𝐫𝐞𝐝
This is the form of the Guru when having became a monk by getting ordained by Ananda on the 10th lunar day of the 2nd month, he learnt all the sutra and tantra scriptures, studying with many learned masters and sages.
𝐝. 𝐆𝐮𝐫𝐮 𝐏𝐚𝐝𝐦𝐚 𝐆𝐲𝐚𝐥𝐩𝐨
On the 10th lunar day of the 12th month, the young Guru Rinpoche, when he lived on his lake, was invited by the King Indra Bodhi of Oddiyana to his palace and was adopted as the king's son.
𝐞. 𝐆𝐮𝐫𝐮 𝐍𝐲𝐢𝐦𝐚 𝐎𝐝𝐳𝐞𝐫
On the 10th day of the 8th month, no harm occurred to Guru Rinpoche when he swallowed poison given to him by non-Buddhist heretics. A great realized yogi, he turned the poison into nectar and thereby became more radiant.
𝐟. 𝐆𝐮𝐫𝐮 𝐒𝐡𝐚𝐤𝐲𝐚 𝐒𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐞
On the 10th day of the 9th month, in the cave of Brown Rock, in the Garuda forest, Guru Rinpoche became the disciple of Acharya Prabha hati.
14:31 𝐠. 𝐆𝐮𝐫𝐮 𝐒𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐞 𝐃𝐫𝐚𝐝𝐨𝐠, 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐑𝐨𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐋𝐢𝐨𝐧
On the 10th day of 5th month, when non-Buddhist heretics tried to destroy the Buddha Dharma in South India, the Precious Guru brought destruction upon them with his miraculous power and raised the status of Buddha Dharma very high.
15:04 𝐡. 𝐆𝐮𝐫𝐮 𝐃𝐨𝐫𝐣𝐞 𝐃𝐫𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐝
On the 10th of the 11th month, Guru Rinpoche reached the realization of Mahamudra, which is the essence of the spiritual path, in the cave of Yangleshod in Nepal.
𝐀𝐟𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐨𝐨𝐧 𝐬𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧:
15:23 𝟏. 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐓𝐰𝐞𝐥𝐯𝐞 𝐓𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐊𝐲𝐨𝐧𝐠
Zhing Kyong are the protectors of the Truth, i.e. "Dharmapalas" who protect the Buddha's teachings.
𝟐. 𝐒𝐞𝐫𝐤𝐲𝐞𝐦
A libation or beverage offering rite is performed by the Acharya or Lobpon (main teacher) of Hemis.
𝟑. 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐅𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐆𝐨𝐦𝐚 (𝐆𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐊𝐞𝐞𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐬)
The Four Gate Keepers work for the welfare of sentient beings as follows.
18:21 𝟒. 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐅𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐋𝐨𝐫𝐝𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐆𝐚𝐯𝐞𝐲𝐚𝐫𝐝𝐬
The Lords of Graveyards, charnel grounds and cemeteries perform the funtion of summoning and magnetizing the evils forces who work against the welfare of sentient beings and the Buddha Dharma.
18:50 𝟓. 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐅𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐂𝐡𝐞𝐦𝐜𝐡𝐨𝐠 𝐇𝐞𝐫𝐮𝐤𝐚
The fierce form of Guru Padmasambhava, Chemchog Heruka, comes out. Evils that could not be brought on the path peacefully and work against the peace and happiness of sentient beings are now eliminated by wrathful means, liberating their minds and sending them into a pure land.
20:18 𝟔. 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐅𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐓𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐠 𝐋𝐞𝐧 (𝐟𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐝𝐚𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐬)
The symbolic figure of all evils, devils and demons, which work against the Buddha's dharma and peace, happiness and welfare of the setient beings, has been to an end. Now, its physical remains are turned into pure nectar of wisdom and this nectar is offered by the five Tsog Len to all Dharmapalas, the protective deities.
20:41 𝟕. 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐓𝐞𝐧 𝐆𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭 𝐆𝐢𝐧𝐠 (𝐇𝐞𝐫𝐨𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐇𝐞𝐫𝐨𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬)
The Heroes come out from the main Assembly Hall, whereas the Heroines come out from Manikhang. Beating small drums, their dance drives away spirits and energies that can harm the dharma and sentient beings, whether they come from ground, the air or from far above the sky.
This concludes the Second Day of the Festival.
