More about Bram Wijnands: Born in Eindhoven, the Netherlands, Bram began piano lessons at three and by eight was already absorbing barrelhouse, boogie-woogie, and stride recordings by legends such as Fats Waller and James P. Johnson. He earned a jazz performance degree from the Hilversum Conservatory in 1991 and that same summer made a sold-out Kansas City debut at the City Light Jazz Club, where enthusiastic audiences packed the room. After an appearance at Carnegie Hall in 1998, Kansas City Mayor Emanuel Cleaver named him the city’s “Ambassador of Swing” and declared April 6 “Bram Wijnands Day.” Now based in Kansas City, he tours internationally, leads trios and seven-piece swingtets, performs regularly at The Majestic and KC Bier Co., and often shares the stage with his daughter, vocalist Lucy Wijnands. Alongside performing, he restores pianos and mentors young musicians, keeping classic swing alive for new generations.
