It owes its name to the sign of a former business located there, called Les Brioches de la Lune.
The street is located on the Butte aux Gravois, a former road outside the walls of Charles V, on land belonging to the Filles-Dieu convent established within the walls.
The first houses were built on this hill in 1513, but the hamlet was destroyed in 1590 for fear that the hill would be used for Henry of Navarre's cannons during the siege of Paris.
Beginning in 1622, the convent's prioresses divided up the land on the hill, and construction was completed around 1648. The plots sold were modest in size, and the first inhabitants were masons, stonemasons, and carpenters.
