Range days like this aren't about hitting the bullseye. The target is just there to give you something consistent to aim at.
There's only one real goal : find the smallest group size.
To control for variables, certain factors are consistent across all the loads:
Times a case has been fired in the past, and in which rifles
Manufacturer of case
Process for loading each cartridge
Bullet : 150gr BTHP Sierra
OAL : 2.8"
Powder : IMR 4064
Only one variable was changed in the loading process: The amount of powder. Each powder charge was loaded into 5 cases, providing 5 shots for a group, 10 groups in all. Charges ranged from 41 to 43.7gr of powder.
The target was set at 100 yards and firing commenced.
While some groups were absolutely tighter than others, the overall feeling was that this rifle should be capable of much better precision. Two nodes were found, each yielding a group size of around 2 MOA. Nothing like the 1MOA or better this rifle can sometimes achieve.
In the next video, it's time to control one more variable to see if better groups can be found amongst the variables of the loading bench.
