The University of California Regents discussed faculty disciplinary procedures on January 22, 2025. The discussion stemmed from concerns about overly-lengthy processes of discipline related to the campus encampments and protests after the Hamas attack of Oct. 7, 2023. After a lengthy presentation on existing processes by UC Provost Katherine Newman and others, Regents expressed concerns about a) the involvement of Regents in the review, b) the seeming limits on what the review could entail, and c) the view that the existing processes were "not working" and a need to "upend" the system.
