The late John Lewis is remembered for his incomparable legacy as an activist fighting for civil rights and racial equality, as well as a stalwart advocate in the philosophy of nonviolent protest. A Freedom Rider who helped to integrate bus stations in the South, he was a leader of the Nashville sit-in movement, the youngest speaker at the 1963 March on Washington, and the chairman of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), which he made into a major civil rights organization. Historian David Greenberg traces Lewis' life through the post-civil rights years, when he headed the Voter Education Project, and his political ascent to become a member of Congress.
