LignoSat, the world’s first wooden satellite, was developed through a collaboration between Kyoto University and Sumitomo Forestry, aiming to reduce space debris and environmental impact in an era of increasing satellite launches. It was launched on November 5, 2024, from Kennedy Space Center aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket and successfully arrived at the International Space Station (ISS) in December 2024 for initial tests. Scheduled to be released in January 2025 for a six-month space evaluation, LignoSat will assess the structural integrity of wood under extreme space conditions, such as temperature fluctuations and radiation. This project challenges traditional satellite design, which heavily relies on metals, by exploring renewable materials that burn upon re-entry, thus minimizing harmful debris.
