How can mathematics help design bus networks, improve climate shelters, understand blood flow, or harvest solar energy from asphalt?
That’s exactly what students explored during the XI Iberian Modeling Week (IMW), hosted from July 7 to 11, 2025, at the Centre de Recerca Matemàtica (CRM) in Barcelona.
The IMW is a joint initiative of math-in (Spain) and pt-maths-in (Portugal) that brings together undergraduate and master’s students to work on real-world problems proposed by companies. Over five days, participants formed teams, each guided by senior researchers and industry mentors, to dive into hands-on mathematical modeling.
This year’s challenges included:
-Efficient bus allocation
-Optimal placement of climate shelters
-Modeling hemodynamics during venous occlusion
-Balancing energy harvesting and flow efficiency in asphalt solar collectors
Beyond the mathematics, IMW is also about international collaboration, teamwork, and communication. By working together across borders, students strengthen ties between academia and industry while gaining skills that will shape their future careers.
In this video, you’ll hear directly from the participants and organisers about their experience at IMW 2025, what they learned, and how mathematics can become a powerful tool for solving complex challenges in society.
