What is Cosplay & What does it mean to be a Cosplayer?

What is Cosplay? Cosplay, or cosplaying is, by definition, a form of dress up or costume play. Cosplayers dress up in costumes that usually are based around Anime, Comic Books, Video Games, and movies. It is a way to "become" your favorite character and to step into the world of your favorite fandom. Cosplayers often congregate at events called "Cosplay Conventions," where they go to join the many others who flaunt their costumes, props, and fan gear. Some also go to make new friends, partake in contests and competitions, to meet famous voice actors/artists/fellow geeks, and to buy merchandise from the Dealer's Room.

At first glance, cosplay is simply an adult version of dress-up. HOWEVER... it really is so much more. Cosplayers usually create their own costumes by hand, which requires the individual to learn skills such as: sewing, prop creation, painting, and PATIENCE!!! Cosplay is a very visual art form, and thus it is not uncommon for a cosplayer to pick up on some modelling, photography, and photo editing skills as well. Cosplay is an art, a hobby, a form of self-expression, a way to connect with others, and most importantly... a learning experience unlike anything you'll ever find at a school or through a vocational training... GOSH COSPLAY IS AWESOME!!!
