The theme and variations is a virtually timeless musical construct, if not in its formal structure dating back to the to Baroque and earlier, at least in improvisation and imitation. What is pretty much unheard of in the canon is the elaboration of variations on a theme consisting of only eighteen notes, counting both hands! But such was the genius of the Czech composer Víta Kaprálová that this was no hurdle for her to clear. Indeed, it inspired her to an amazing diversity of invention. Imagine her in the town square hearing these bells pealing whatever hour it was and seeing this music spring to life in her mind. It's a tragedy that her death at just 25 robbed the world of an untold wealth of beautiful music in her unique and brilliant voice. What we do have of her output we may cherish all the more for it.
