A video I made for the Norwich Cycling Campaign, July 2021
The yellow Pedalway's northern half runs from the Aviation Academy near the airport into the city. It's mostly on road through quiet streets on on traffic calmed roads with a 20 mph limit. There are some sections of off road, mostly shared use pavements and several toucan crossings of busy roads.
The existing route runs through large housing estates and so serves a large population.
There are plans to extend the Yellow Pedalway through the airport to reach the Cromer Road. If this happens it would provide a connection to the area around Middleton's Lane and provide an alternative commuting route into the city avoiding the traffic choked Cromer and Aylsham Roads. It is slightly longer, being 5.23Km (3.25 miles) compared to 4.6Km (2.86 miles) of the more direct main road, but it is a lot less stressful and dangerous.
The biggest issue you'll encounter is the lack of signage pointing out the route. The small stickers on lamp posts that mark the Pedalway routes have largely vanished if they were there to begin with.
So is it up to the job? Probably mostly, or it would be if the route was properly signed. There are some weak sections, especially the shared use pavements toward the city end.
There is scope to give the whole thing a real identity, perhaps with cycle decal road markings. The actual route is an easy ride, the hills being very gentle. The extra distance is a price worth paying to avoid the Cromer and Alsham Road traffic. On the whole a surprisingly enjoyable and easy ride.
