Melbourne Mentorship Stay - Winners of the 2023 Technology Infusion Grand Challenge

Team Tsars, from Vellore Institute of Technology in India, won the grand prize in the fifth round of the Technology Infusion Grand Challenge, organised by La Trobe University.

The team of five: Vaishnavi Tripuraribhatla, Suseth Menon, Reuben Manoj, Tamilmynthan Senthilyogan, and Shakthi Magender Nirmala, identified the very real problem of a significant number of road accidents due to driving under the influence of alcohol, particularly in Chennai. The key area of focus was two-wheelers which is a common form of transport in the region.

Their solution was to develop a smart breathalyser, SafenSober, which utilises sensors to detect alcohol levels of the rider and verify the presence of a helmet using Machine Learning algorithms before enabling the ignition of a motorbike — helping prevent DUI among users while enforcing road safety by mandating wearing a helmet.

The Technology Infusion Grand Challenge is an innovation competition for undergraduate students engaged in Business Studies or in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) disciplines in an Asian University. Students are given the opportunity to use the skills gained in their studies to solve some of today’s pressing problems.
