On a warm July Sunday, I set out to complete the southern portion of the East Don River Trail up to Riverdale Park. Although construction is ongoing, with completion expected by September 2025, I decided to take on the challenge and see how far I could get. As I walked from Eglinton Avenue East and entered the trail at Bermondsey Road, I was accompanied by the scenic East Don River. The majority of the trail was paved, with some metal bridges and boardwalks providing a smooth passage. However, there were several places where construction was underway, including tunnels under train tracks, new bridges, and stretches of unpaved trail that left me walking on dusty terrain.
Despite the occasional rough patch, I continued along the path until I reached the Elevated Wetlands Sculptures, where I veered onto the Lower Don River Trail. After a lunch break at the Fish Ladder, I watched in amusement as a Great Blue Heron expertly caught fish. The rest of my journey took me under Bloor Street, Gerrard Street, and Dundas Street before finally leaving the trail at Queen Street East.
Along the way, I visited the Fork of the Don, where the West Don River and East Don River meet in a picturesque confluence. It was a great spot to take a break and appreciate the beauty of the natural world amidst the hustle and
bustle of city life. Overall, my walk along the East Don River Trail was a enjoyable experience that allowed me to connect with nature and get some exercise.
